Pune: A sessions court at Vadgaon Maval on Tuesday convicted and sentenced Vasant Satkar (47) from Kamshet to life imprisonment for murdering his wife and son and attempting to kill his daughter and a family friend in his house at Kanhe Phata on Pune-Mumbai highway early on July 10, 2017. The prosecution's case was that Satkar, a casual worker, assaulted his wife Rajani (44) with a billhook because he suspected her of infidelity. He also attacked his minor son Anush.

The mother and son died due to grievous wounds to neck. The prosecution said that Satkar also assaulted his daughter Shubhra alias Shravani (16) and neighbour Ganesh Ambekar, who rushed to their house on hearing the screams of the victims. Later, Satkar surrendered himself at Wadgaon Maval police station and narrated to the police how he committed the crime.

Additional sessions judge D K Anbhule convicted and sentenced Satkar to a life term for murdering his wife and son. The court also sentenced Satkar to life imprisonment for attempting to murder his daughter and neighbour. Both sentences will run concurrently.

The court imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Satkar. If deposited, the fine would be given as compensation to Shubhra. Additional public prosecutor Sunil More relied on the evidence of 10 witnesses, including the injured victims, to prove the guilt of the accused.
