Essentially as a donation at a cost of $1, the Library will become the new owner of the 5-acre site that once served as the Yellow Jackets’ home gridiron for football games for nearly 100 years, beginning in 1915 and concluding in 2011.

The Board selected the bid from the Library over a second bid from We Are Greenville, a recently-established nonprofit agency that also purued the property as a donation. The proposal from the library, in part, calls for the property to be transformed into a venue for outdoor community and library events, with plans to construct a permanent stage with electrical and sound capabilities and a portion of the field landscaped to create a “natural amphitheater.” We Are Greenville’s proposal called in part for the property to remain an athletic venue while maintaining the property’s existing facilities and converting the football field into a soccer field, with an additional field proposed to be constructed on the east side of the property, while also serving as a venue for community events.
