Since the opening of Joyful Art Studio, owner and founder Cristie Baron has brought her passion for art to the students of Vacaville. “Art has always been a part of my life. I don’t remember it not being,” says Baron.

“Even though I was in other careers, art was always foundational for me, whether it was for mental health or for fun or collaborating with others.” Joyful Art Studio has existed for several years now, but its non-profit branch opened just earlier this year. Since then, Baron has worked to develop the nonprofit and increase its reach in the community.

Baron never saw herself as a teacher, starting the studio so her children could practice art. “My kids were seeking art classes when they were in elementary school and it was really discouraging that there was no access to art,” she says. First, the studio was mobile, using rooms at various different venues, says Baron.

During the COVID pandemic, she taught classes online and gained a large audience from families that chose to homeschool. Now, Joyful Art Studio has a brick and mortar location in downtown Vacaville. “It just sort of has organically grown due to the need for art,” said Baron.

She says the decision to start the non-profit branch sparked from one question: “How could I serve my community the best?” “I just always felt the tug that our community needs something bigger,” she said. “It’s not an art heavy community, but there is a need for it and a desire for it.” Art teaches.
