Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has announced a nationwide shutter-down strike on August 28 to protest against high electricity bills and inflation. Addressing a rally organised by JI in Multan on Friday, Hafiz Naeem criticised all political parties for burdening the public with exorbitant electricity bills. "These bills have left the people in distress.
The public can no longer bear the luxuries and privileges of the rulers," he stated. "We did not go home after making deals with the government. We remain firm on our demands.
If these are not met, we will march towards Islamabad with a sea of people," he warned. Referring to the recent reduction in electricity tariffs, he said, "Today they have announced a reduction of Rs14 per unit. The public should note who stood firm on this issue and whose efforts led to this reduction.
It's not about taking credit, but we will not accept expensive electricity in any case." Hafiz Naeem also questioned why Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif cannot extend this relief across the country if Nawaz Sharif can announce a reduction in electricity prices in Punjab. He suggested that gradually eliminating interest-based loans could provide further relief on electricity bills.
