Pune: Jewellery worth Rs3.4 lakh was stolen from a Kolhapur-based goldsmith ’s sedan car after it met with an accident in Bavdhan on Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass on Aug 16. The goldsmith, Mahesh Zopdekar (57), told TOI that the accident occurred around 11 am when he and his wife were returning to Kolhapur after attending a function in Mumbai.

“In an attempt to overtake, my car brushed a truck and turned on its side. My car’s window panes broke and I fainted for a few seconds due to the sudden shock,” he said. After regaining consciousness, he found that a crowd had gathered around the car.

“Someone took advantage of the situation and picked up the purse from the backseat of the car,” he added. “After consulting with my friend from Kolhapur, I came back to Pune on Tuesday and lodged a complaint with the police,” he said. An officer with the Hinjewadi police said a case was registered under section 303 (2) ( theft ) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
