The town’s main street, with its Lawson’s convenience store, offered a perfect spot to capture Mount Fuji in the background. This location became a sensation on Instagram and TikTok, drawing visitors from all over the globe. But fame comes with a price, according to CNN.
THE MOUNT FUJI BARRIER The sudden influx of tourists overwhelmed the town. Local residents began to suffer. “People left rubbish everywhere and ignored traffic rules,” said one frustrated resident.
“Even with signs and security guards, it was chaos.” In response, the town took a drastic step. In May, they put up a large black net, effectively blocking the famous view of Mount Fuji.
CONTROVERSY OVER THE MOUNT FUJI The move was meant to curb the overwhelming number of tourists and restore some peace to the town. The barrier, however, sparked controversy. Many criticised the decision, saying it deprived visitors of one of Japan’s most iconic views.
Still, the town stood firm. “Since we installed the screen, there have been no more people staying long in the area. We do feel it has been effective,” a city counc.
