Sunday, November 10, 2024 The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a heightened alert for residents in Okinawa as intense rainfall continues to impact the southernmost prefecture, posing serious risks of mudslides and other weather-related disasters. According to the JMA, unstable atmospheric conditions are driving the torrential downpours, fueled by a strong influx of moist air that has developed dense rain clouds over the region, particularly in northern Okinawa. In the early hours, approximately 110 millimeters of rain fell within one hour in parts of Okinawa, including areas near the western and eastern sections of Nago City, as reported by a news channel.

The JMA forecasts localized downpours accompanied by thunder throughout Okinawa Prefecture into Sunday evening, with heavy rains also expected in the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture. This weather follows record-breaking rainfall on Saturday, which caused severe flooding and mudslides across Okinawa and Amami. Weather officials are urging extreme caution, warning residents to remain vigilant against potential mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and river surges due to the saturated ground and continuous heavy rain.
