DC Studios chief James Gunn has debunked a rather strange rumor that has popped up in the past few days, one that suggested that pop singer Dua Lipa has signed on to play stage magician/actual sorceress character Zatanna in the DC Universe. The Grammy Award-winner was rumored to not only have landed the part, but it was also claimed that she had signed a ten-year contract with DC Studios – despite only a few acting credits to her name. Gunn was asked about the rumor on , and understandably shot it down saying it wasn’t true, and adding: “10 year contract? Do they think this is the 1930’s? I’m a Dua Lipa fan, but no.
” A Zatanna project was in the works back in 2021 prior to Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC, that version had filmmaker Emerald Fennell hired to pen the script for what was going to be J.J. Abrams’ Justice League Dark universe of DC characters.
When Gunn and Safran took over DC and announced their “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” slate, “Zatanna” was a notable, but unsurprising, absentee from the list. Last year, Fennell confirmed that film was no longer happening but she did manage to complete a “reasonably demented” script before it fell apart. She previously appeared in animated form and once in live-action in a guest-starring capacity on “Smallville” where she was played by second season “Reacher” star Serinda Swan.
