Kate Garraway has bravely come forward in a discussion about her struggle with a thyroid condition. It became apparent following the birth of her daughter Darcey, who is now 18. The 57-year-old Good Morning Britain star previously opened up in a candid discussion with Anthea Turner on fashion designer Sarah Haran's YouTube channel.
Post-pregnancy, Kate experienced an overactive thyroid, leading to rapid and unexpected weight loss. During the chat, she explained: "I've got thyroid problems, I've got the autoimmune thyroid condition. And it was discovered after I had Darcey, when it went massively overactive and actually I got super skinny.
"I could literally eat anything and I was thin. And initially I thought 'this is great' and then I thought actually this is not great." The NHS explains that an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, typically occurs when the thyroid gland produces too many thyroid hormones.
Although this can affect anyone, it's especially common among people aged between 20 and 40 years old. "The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, just in front of the windpipe (trachea). It produces hormones that affect things such as your heart rate and body temperature," the NHS explains.
