A worker has died at the John Hunter Hospital redevelopment site , SafeWork NSW says. Login or signup to continue reading The state agency said its officials attended the New Lambton Heights site on Thursday morning, after being "notified of a workplace incident". "The male worker was operating a heavy vehicle at the time of the incident and sustained fatal injuries," a SafeWork NSW spokesperson said.
The agency was working with emergency services to "determine the cause of the incident". "Enquiries remain ongoing and no further comment can be made at this time." Construction company Multiplex is the main contractor for the $835 million hospital expansion .
"An incident has occurred at our John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct project," a Multiplex statement said. "A worker has suffered a suspected medical episode while driving a vehicle and has sadly passed away. "The episode is under investigation by the coroner, and police and SafeWork NSW are on the scene.
"We are providing support to our workforce and our thoughts are with the worker and their family." The redevelopment site was under the spotlight in July last year when Harry McWilliam died there, at age 20, when a steel reinforcement fell and struck him. In August, a tower of steel reinforcement crashed to the ground in an accident similar to one that killed Mr McWilliam .
The Newcastle Herald reported in April that 450 workers were at the construction site each day. The project included a new emergency department.
