The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance following the death of an Irish tourist in Thailand. It's understood the 67-year-old Irish man was killed in a fall from a balcony at a luxury hotel in Pattaya in the early hours of yesterday morning. Local reports say authorities are waiting to review CCTV footage to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The area was cordoned off by hotel security before rescue workers removed his body from the area. His remains have been taken to a local hospital where they will be formally handed over to his family. Pattaya is a city of around 100,000 people along Thailand's south coast some 150 km southeast of Bangkok.

It is known for its beaches and nightlife and attracts 'hundreds of thousands of visitors each year', according to Thailand's tourism authority. Reporting by: Teena Gates and Jack Quann.
