This week the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) announced the winners of its annual Pub of the Year competition, which celebrates the nation's top pubs for their welcoming atmosphere and excellent selection of beers. Each year, venues are meticulously judged on their ambiance, service, inclusivity, overall impression, and range of live beer, real cider and perry.

Thousands of pubs participate in the ranking process, which has now been narrowed down to 17 regional winners. For the first time, this includes a winner from Northern Ireland, which was previously grouped with Scotland.The Greater Manchester Pub of the Year title has been awarded to the Northumberland Arms in Marple Bridge.
