Wednesday, July 17, 2024 Air Astana, in partnership with KazMunayGas, Kazakhstan’s prominent state-owned oil and gas enterprise, co-funded an initial feasibility study focusing on the production and application of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Kazakhstan. This project, supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Aviation Administration of Kazakhstan, was implemented by ICF, a notable provider of global advisory and technology services. The study undertook a comprehensive analysis of strategies aimed at decarbonizing aviation, providing insights into the worldwide SAF market.

It evaluated the supply and demand dynamics and the availability of necessary raw materials essential for SAF production. Additionally, it scrutinized the global landscape of SAF to better understand its potential integration within Kazakhstan. Furthermore, the study assessed various SAF production technologies to ascertain their suitability for the local market.

This evaluation helped develop practical recommendations for the next steps in expanding Kazakhstan’s SAF industry, focusing on local compatibility and efficiency. Demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability, Air Astana has set a strategic goal to become the most sustainable airline in the CIS and Central Asia. The airline has pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and supports the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines resolution, aiming for a 5% SAF usage by 2030.
