The popular Sunday roast is not something I tend to eat very often. I’m often too busy to cook it and don’t tend to consider it when eating out. The large traditional British dish which typically consists of ‘meat and two veg’ is available across many pubs and restaurants in Bristol - for those who can afford it.

As a vegetarian, I often forget that nowadays most places offer an alternative which doesn’t always have to be a nut roast. I ended up enjoying my first Sunday roast since Christmas Day after taking a ferry to the popular riverside bar Beeses in Conham River Park and it was probably one of the best I've ever had. Having never been to Beeses before I was unaware that other than bar snacks, the Sunday roasts were the only items on the menu.

I went for the 'Wellington Slice Roast' which was one of two vegan and vegetarian options, the other being nut roast. For meat eaters there were beef, chicken, lamb and pork options available. Mine was slightly cheaper than the meat roasts and set me back £16.

50. Alongside the vegetable Wellington were all the standard vegetable items that were used for all the roasts. These were roast potatoes that were sliced like wedges, a Yorkshire pudding, a generous portion of kale all covered in gravy.

In addition, there were extra vegetables on a separate plate that we could add to our roasts which included red cabbage, carrots and broccoli. Sometimes I find the veg in a roast to be dry or lacking in flavour but this certainly was.
