Most of us would expect to be paying a fortune for a city break to London. The capital is known for its own "London pricing" that might put families off planning a jaunt there. But I managed to go on a break to London that ended up being a bit of a bargain all round for me and my nine-year-old son.

So you wouldn't expect this to be a bargain place to stay in the city. The hotel base for our stay was The Pelham, a five star boutique hotel right in the heart of the area - just opposite the tube station here. That in itself made it a great location for me and my son, as it meant after getting a train down from Crewe to London Euston (tickets can be purchased from £50 if you buy in advance online), we were then able to get a quick and easy connecting tube to South Kensington.
Children under 11 travel free on the tube, and as it was my son's first time using the underground system he was fairly excited about it all too. Once we arrived at the hotel we found a real slice of luxury, and the good news here if you are travelling with youngsters is that kids under the age of six stay for free, and children under 16 stay for free if staying with one adult.
