McVities Hobnobs are a favourite in our household. That oaty goodness makes them feel like a less sinful snack than a regular choccie bickie regardless of whether or not this is actually true. Great for dunking, they have just the right level of crumbliness that melts in the mouth, not in your mug.

They are, however, a treat because they are considerably more expensive than supermarket own brand versions. I wondered whether I might be able to save a bit of money by finding an alternative brand that we liked just as much. So, I went to Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's and Morrisons to buy their oat biscuit varieties and enlisted the kids in helping me taste test them.

It was a tough job but someone had to do it. There were 17 biscuits in the pack, which works out to just under 9p per biscuit. Made with 40 percent rolled oats, each biscuit contains 3.5g sugar, 1.

3g saturated fat, 72 kcal, 1g fibre and 1.1g protein. The Hobnobs had a treacly taste that was almost caramel in flavour.

Dark in colour, they were packed full of oats. They had a lovely soft texture but maintained their integrity when dunked. I gave them 5 out of 5 stars.
