Anastacia has confirmed the true reason she is rarely seen without her trademark sunglasses in a rare interview with an Australian radio station. The “Left Outside Alone” hitmaker is back in Australia to kick off the festivities at Penfolds Victoria Derby Day in Melbourne on Saturday. On Wednesday, the 56-year-old pop icon revealed to Nova 100's Jase & Lauren that her signature eyewear is not just a fashion accessory.

"They've always been prescription. I've had glasses on since I was six," she told the surprised hosts. "I've been wearing glasses in different shapes and decided to put a tint in them in my early 20s, just because guys would say, 'You're a pretty sexy librarian'.

“And I was like, 'I can't see, get away!'" Anastacia said it was “very strange” when sunglasses became so associated with her brand. "They became a very strange thing that I didn't mean to happen, but it became, like, recognisable,” she said. The singer’s admission comes after she successfully battled several other health issues, including two instances of breast cancer.

Anastacia also suffers from Crohn’s disease that required surgery to remove part of her intestine. Born Anastacia Lyn Newkirk, the Chicago native was crowned the most successful female artist of the year on Australia’s ARIA singles chart in 2004. While the “I’m Outta Love” singer has had several monster hits in Europe and Australia, Anastacia has seen relatively little success in her native United States.
