ROCHESTER — A well-known restaurateur is returning to Rochester and he is bringing some traditional Szechuan and Cantonese flavors with his new Hunan Bistro restaurant. Jacky Dong , a past owner who created many local dishes at Hunan Garden and Kingdom Buffet, is coming back to Rochester after a few years away. He said many people have urged him to open a new restaurant here.
ADVERTISEMENT He hopes to open the doors of the new 150-seat restaurant in late March or early April. Dong anticipates needing a team of eight to nine employees to staff the new business, which will also offer take-out. “I’m bringing dishes that Rochester has not seen on a menu before.
If you have ever been to China, you will know these flavors,” he said sitting in his new dining area. Some of the dishes on the Hunan Bistro menu that might be new to Rochester diners include Szechuan-style poached fish, beef sirloin in hot pot and Chongqing pickled fish soup and ten flavor spare ribs, among others. Dong added that customers can ask to adjust the spice levels, depending on their tastes.
Construction is wrapping up on work to renovate and update the restaurant space at 34 17th Ave. NW in the Miracle Mile shopping center. That’s the spot last occupied by Los Jarritos Cafe and Sky Dragon Buffet before that.
“It’s gorgeous. Everything is updated. Even the restrooms are gorgeous,” he said looking around the traditionally decorated dining room.
