Vinul Karunaratne immigrated to Australia from Sri Lanka in 2015 with almost nothing to his name. Nine years later, he has made enough money to quit his job as a night shift worker at 7-Eleven and take charge of his own schedule using Airtasker.

Mr Karunaratne began working at the service station soon after moving to Melbourne but in 2019 he started taking on end-of-lease cleaning jobs. Airtasker is a Sydney-based online marketplace that allows users to post everyday tasks - such as cleaning, assembling furniture or yard work - for others to complete in exchange for cash. 'When I started I didn't even have much equipment.

I had a vacuum, mop and bucket and some rags,' Mr Karunaratne told 7News on Tuesday. 'That was the stuff I had at home.' The work kept rolling in for Mr Karunaratne and he was soon able to leave his 7-Eleven position behind and do his Airtasker gig full-time.
