As the Hīkoi mō Te Tiriti grows and clips of MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke go viral online, some famous names have thrown their support behind the protest and expressed support for indigenous rights. With Coldplay performing three shows at Eden Park at the same time as the hīkoi made its way down the country, Coldplay’s Chris Martin had a message for concertgoers on Saturday night. “I don’t want to be too controversial, but I do want to say that from our perspective New Zealand’s relationship with its indigenous people is very inspiring and I would hate to see it go backwards,” Martin told the crowd.

“Don’t be afraid to be the world leader in how you treat people, okay. So thank you for that example of kindness that you set.” Clips of the speech have been shared on TikTok and Facebook, where it drew thousands of views and hundreds of comments.
