High street retailer Select Fashion is reportedly gearing up to close 35 stores in the upcoming weeks. The brand, which went into administration in 2019, entered a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) last summer - an agreement that allows a company to pay off its debts over a set period, subject to approval by creditors. Over recent years, Select has been quietly closing branches, including outlets in Ipswich, Kent, Cwmbran and the Erith Riverside Shopping Centre in London in 2024.
Earlier this year, its Kidderminster and Thornaby stores were permanently shut down. As reported by The Sun, an additional 35 locations are due to close permanently by March 15, including in Middlesbrough and Hartlepool. This leaves just 48 stores remaining, reports Teesside Live Before its administration in 2019, the fashion chain had a total of 169 stores before being bought out of administration by Genus UK Limited.
Select first made its mark on the British fashion scene in the 1980s and is currently owned by Turkish entrepreneur Cafer Mahiroglu. However, it joins a growing list of retailers announcing store closures in recent months. Data from the Centre for Retail Research shows that 13,479 stores, equating to 37 per day, permanently closed their doors in 2024.
