Mac the police dog had to have his eye removed because of an infection (Image: NFRSA) A hero retired police dog who has sniffed out more than £1million worth of drugs during his career is now needing urgent vet treatment after being struck down by a heartbreaking infection. Mac the eight-year-old springer spaniel has served the nation loyally as a member of the Police Scotland Operational Support (PSOS) dogs unit and helped officers seize tonnes of narcotics. As a drug detection dog Mac worked with his handler Stewart Rae and now lives with the Rae family in retirement.

But tragedy struck when a severe infection meant Mac had to endure hours of surgery to have his left eye removed. Now The National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA) has launched an urgent appeal to raise £6,000 to help fund Mac's treatment and repay some of the debt society owes to this former front line drugs dog. function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.
