Mumbai: A 26-year-old man was arrested by Malwani Police on Saturday on charges of murdering his wife. Ittefaq Ansari , 26, surrendered at Malwani Police station around 6 am, police said. He admitted to having slit his wife, Ayesha Shaikh's, throat following a dispute at their residence in Ambhujwadi slum.

Police said this was a second marriage for both of them. Shaikh, 23, had two kids with her earlier husband. Her children and her husband lived with her parents.

Shaikh was in regular touch with her earlier husband, which Ansari objected to. He doubted Shaikh's fidelity and the two fought regularly. Between 4 and 5 am on Saturday, they had a major fight.

Ansari used a kitchen knife to slit her throat. Police rushed to the crime scene after Ansari surrendered and moved Shaikh to the civic-run Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali where she was pronounced dead. The police have recovered the knife from the crime scene.

Police said Ansari worked as a tailor. He has been booked under the provisions of Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita..
