FARGO — If you're a snowbird looking to escape the cold this winter, you might be wondering if your medical coverage will travel with you. Health insurance experts say the short answer is, yes. However, they recommend you ask a few key questions before picking a plan.

Questions like are prescriptions covered? Which providers can you see? Is telehealth covered? "To be able to have that confidence that they have coverage, insurance coverage, the entire trip. Both to their sunny location and back to North Dakota, it's so important for them to know that they are covered and cared for," Kristi Huber, the chief marketing officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, said. Specifically, you should look for plans that cover out of state medical expenses.

At Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, they cover over 90% of providers throughout the country. "It's really important as you're selecting your plan to understand what is covered and which providers and care systems are covered in your plan, especially, if you're thinking ahead so that you, in case there is an emergency you know exactly who you can go see," Huber said. She also says you should call your insurance provider if you have any questions about what's covered out of state.
