Mumbai: Choti Diwali, also known as Roop Chaudas, Kali Chaudas or Narak Chaturdashi, is celebrated a day before the main Diwali festival.

This auspicious occasion holds great significance in Hindu culture and is marked by various rituals and traditions that focus on beauty, prosperity, and the removal of negativity. According to Hindu mythology, Choti Diwali commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, who terrorised the heavens and Earth. Lord Krishna defeated Narakasura, freeing the imprisoned souls and restoring peace, making this day one of triumph and celebration.

It is believed that the day is dedicated to cleansing homes and enhancing one’s beauty. Devotees perform an oil massage using natural ingredients like turmeric, sandalwood, and gram flour to enhance beauty and radiance. People light oil lamps (diyas) to ward off negativity and honour the divine, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness.

Colourful rangoli designs are created at the entrance of homes to welcome guests and deities. Families prepare and share sweets, signifying joy and the sweetness of life. The evening is often dedicated to worshipping Goddess Kali, seeking her blessings for protection and prosperity.
