Half yearly box office-report 2024: Gross box office collection of all films is Rs. 5015 cr; Kalki 2898 AD, Hanuman, Fighter are the ONLY films to cross the Rs. 200 cr mark

The period between January to June 2023 was a great one for Indian cinema, particularly Bollywood. After a poor 2022, the year thereafter brought cheer as it saw the release of blockbusters like Pathaan and The Kerala Story. Such blockbusters were missing in the first six months of 2024. Yet, overall, it was a healthy one for the Indian film industry. As per the latest ‘The Ormax India Box Office Report: January - June 2024’, the cumulative gross domestic box office collections of the films released in this period is Rs. 5,015 crores. This is 3% more than the earnings of all the Indian films which were released between January to June 2023.As expected, the futuristic-mythological spectacle Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan, was the highest grosser, grossing Rs. 772 crores in all languages. This was followed by the Telugu film Hanuman, collecting Rs. 240 crores gross. The Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone starrer Fighter was less than Rs. 3 crores short of beating Hanuman, as it earned Rs. 237.44 crores gross. The Ajay Devgn-starrer Shaitaan took the fourth position, earning Rs. 177.96 crores. The sleeper blockbuster from Malayalam cinema, Manjummel Boys, was in the fifth position, earning a record Rs. 170 crores.Not a single Tamil film made it to the top 10 list, while as many as 3 films were a part of it last year. The sole Hollywood film in this coveted list of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.Going by the monthly data, the total gross collections of all films in January stood at Rs. 935 crores. It slipped to Rs. 685 crores in February but jumped to Rs. 1,004 crores in March. The figures had a sharp drop in April as the collections were a mere Rs. 459 crores. It had a slight jump in May when it collected Rs. 673 crores. June, however, was the best month of the year so far, collecting Rs. 1,260 crores. This was thanks not just to Kalki 2898 AD but also the sleeper super-hit, Munjya.Kalki 2898 AD single-handedly contributed to 15% of the overall India box office this year, as per this report.In the absence of a big blockbuster, the share of Bollywood dropped to 35% from 37% last year. But it is still impressive considering that the six-month period was dominated mainly by mid-sized films. Telugu films had a share of 23%. Malayalam cinema, meanwhile, contributed 15% to the overall box-office. It is at another level right now as the report states that Malayalam cinema, in the first half of 2024, has already grossed more than its entire collections in 2023.The share of Tamil cinema is 12% while that of Kannada films is a mere 1%. Even the Punjabi cinema's share is more, at 3%, thanks to the outperformance of Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Jatt & Juliet 3.In fact, the report also mentions Jatt & Juliet 3 along with films like Munjya, Kartik Aaryan-starrer Chandu Champion and Vijay Sethupathi's path-breaking film Maharaja.
