Thiruvananthapuram: Following the high court order that overturned a circular declaring specific Saturdays as working days for govt and aided schools in the state, the general education department has suspended the previous order. The director of general education issued a circular stating that Saturdays will not be considered working days until the court makes a final decision on the matter. Previously, the general education department had designated 25 Saturdays as working days to ensure a total of 220 working days for the 2024-25 academic year.
General Education minister V Sivankutty had indicated that the government does not plan to appeal the high court’s decision, though no official confirmation has been made. Teachers' organizations had opposed the govt's decision to make 25 Saturdays working days. The court ruled that the director of general education lacked the authority to issue such an order, as it pertains to policy decisions.
