Emotions were running high in the studio today, with Susanna Reid stepping in to comfort a guest after she burst into tears live on-air. The show had invited Doreen Soulsby to discuss the potential release of the man who killed her daughter Joanne Tulip.

Steven Ling stabbed Joanne 60 times during sex, and confessed to raping her, but he was never charged for the sexual offence, only for murder. Ling was jailed for life in December 1998, but over 25 years later has now been cleared to be freed by a parole board. As a rape charge was never brought against him, however, Ling was never added to a sex offender register, meaning as he is released back into society, there will be no police protections for those around him.

Doreen was clearly struggling as she told her story in the incredibly difficult interview and at one point reached for a box of tissues. Susanna asked: "Tell us about your daughter, tell us about Joanne." Doreen admitted it was her first live studio TV interview and apologised for getting overwhelmed, however Susanna was quick to comfort her.
