"Now is the most crucial time for shopping, for retail, and we absolutely depend on this 33% to 40% of our annual revenue happening right now," he said. The "right now" is the period between the first of November and the end of December.

It is a make-or-break sales period for retailers. Target is already sounding an alarm, according to CNN, and is expecting a "surprisingly weak holiday shopping season." However, the Deloitte holiday retail survey found optimism was higher and that shoppers plan to increase their spending by 8%.

Rhodes and his wife Katy, the owners of Crockett Street Trading Company in downtown Shreveport, don't have the brand awareness, money or marketing muscle of Target or other retail giants like Amazon, Temu and Walmart. However, their small general mercantile and vintage goods store still goes head-to-head with them in the battle for local shopping dollars. That's why it is important for their shop to be noticed, and over the past couple of years that has meant not waiting for the "traditional" Black Friday holiday season shopping kick-off.
