Residents in and around Glasgow were treated with a spectacular feast for the eyes on Monday night following the arrival of northern lights and a . People in the city and further afield were starstruck at the beautiful sight, with many sharing the "amazing" encounter on social media. Over 100 shooting stars from the Perseid meteor shower reportedly zoomed across the skies every hour last night - in areas including Glasgow, and Gourock.

Some locals were over the moon when they spotted the rare sight, after missing the phenomenon when it braced skies across the country earlier this year. North Lanarkshire resident, Louise McMonigle was in her 'jammies' when a friend let her know about the aurora borealis. She told : "We missed the show in May as we were on holiday so I had to go see.

We drove up towards Palacerigg where the road was dark and faced north with the kids to see if we could see them and the perseid meteor shower. We saw both. "The kids saw their first shooting stars and then we seen the lights, it was amazing to see the lights in full swing and in real life.

We loved it. "We have tried a few times to see the lights but never had anything come up so this was just incredible." Cumbernauld local, Pat Cruickshanks added: "I had gone to a viewpoint over Condorrat and Cumbernauld hoping to catch them and was lucky enough to get a few shots on my phone camera.

"It is amazing that such natural beauty can be seen here as a result of just one solar flare.".
