QUICKSBURG -- There is nothing like playing football on a Friday night in the mud. The Stonewall Jackson Generals played football the old-fashioned way -- on the ground. They also had their passing attack in full effect in a 52-16 football home win over the Virginia Spartans.
“Being able to run the ball as well as we did is nice,” Stonewall Jackson head football coach Kyle Kokkonen said. “We are run heavy. We want to win the game pounding the football, so that was nice.
” We are already over halfway through the season of high school football. The Generals season record is 2-4. Kokkonen said he felt that they needed a lift after their loss to Page County last Friday.
“It is exactly what our team needed,” Kokkonen said. “For homecoming it is great, but a little bit of a pick me up for the back half of our season is exactly what we needed.” The Generals defend their home turf against the Spartans.
The Virginia Spartans are a homeschool group in Roanoke. Last year was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Virginia Spartans beat Stonewall Jackson 29-26 last year.
On Friday, the Generals got their revenge for last season. The Spartans would get the first possession of the game, but in the first half the Generals were ready for everything that Spartans had to offer. “Our kids came out in the first half and did exactly what we told them they needed to do,” Kokkonen said.
“They came out and they were physical and under control.” The Generals jumped on.
