Wednesday, August 14, 2024 Garmin’s innovations have transformed aviation, offering essential tools for pilots and operators globally, with groundbreaking tech like the Garmin Autoland system. Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) has announced the certification of its Runway Occupancy Awareness (ROA) software, the first to utilize Surface Indications and Alert (SURF-IA) technology. This innovative software leverages ADS-B traffic to alert crews to potential runway incursions from nearby airborne aircraft, ground vehicles, and aircraft on the ground.

The initial FAA certification was granted to Textron Aviation for the G1000® NXi-equipped Cessna Caravan. Garmin anticipates receiving FAA certification for ROA on its G5000® STC, which covers the Cessna Citation Excel, XLS, XLS+, and XLS Gen2, by September 2024. The company also plans to expand certification to additional Garmin-equipped aircraft in the coming months.

Initially, ROA will be available on select Garmin Integrated Flight Decks, including those on G1000 NXi and G5000-equipped aircraft, catering to a wide range of general and business aviation markets. “With the rate of runway incursions increasing, there is a real need for increased safety tools in the cockpit. Equipping pilots with this technology can reduce the risk of runway incursions and help provide confidence for pilots navigating busy and complex airports.
