A court settlement has led to improvements in one Cullman County city. According to information from the Alabama Attorney General's Office, funds from a legal settlement with Tyson Farms and the state of Alabama helped pay for a new fire station and park improvements in Garden City. Folks gathered July 24 to celebrate the grand openings of the new fire station and the park, which included a new kayak launch, restrooms, walking trail and more.

A news release stated the court settlement came after an illegal wastewater discharge at a facility in Hanceville in 2019, in which an estimated 175,000 fish were killed. “The environmental and economic impact on Garden City because of the illegal wastewater discharge was immense. I am glad that we have been able to help the people of Garden City begin to heal from this man-made disaster, and hope that this park will be a benefit to the community and allow others to come to this part of the state and witness for themselves how beautiful it is,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said.

The settlement will fund two more improvement projects in the Colony and Sipsey communities. Your neighborhood: Local coverage from WVTM 13.
