Brits have some peculiar favourites when it comes to smells, with nail polish, tarmac and even tennis balls topping the list. A survey involving 2,000 adults showed that many hold an odd fondness for the smell of rain, that coveted 'new car' essence, and the aroma of fresh newspaper pages. However, a fifth of those polled sheepishly shared that they're somewhat embarrassed by their attraction to certain odours - which include cigarette smoke, manure and wet dog.

The poll, as it turns out, connects 47% of grown-ups with quirky scents triggering happy memories. Auto Trader 's Editorial Director, Erin Baker, who orchestrated the poll, commented: "People often find themselves drawn to unusual scents because they evoke strong emotions or memories." Following on, it's unsurprising then that 46% relate certain odours to individuals they've encountered and a nostalgic 63% can be transported back to their childhood days simply through scent.

Citrus fragrances won the top spot as the most-liked smell category at 34%, closely followed by woody (33%) and floral (32%) scents. Celebrating the all-time classic new car fragrance, esteemed maitre d' Fred Sirieix has joined forces with the car trading platform Auto Trader to craft distinctive scent portfolios particular to various car makers.
