Pune: The price of tomatoes has started falling in wholesale and retail markets following increased supply of the kitchen staple in the last few days, said officials from APMC markets in Pune and Narayangaon. In retail markets in the city, price has dropped to Rs 60 to Rs 80 per kg in the last few days from Rs 100 to Rs 120 around a month ago. In the previous week, the Narayangaon market had received 12,000 to 15,000 crates of tomatoes.

Now, it has increased to 30,000 to 35,000 crates. As a result, price has also fallen to Rs 100 to 400 per crate (each crate contains 20 kg of tomatoes). The staggering price of tomatoes had hit the headlines when it touched Rs 100 per kg.

This was mainly due to less arrival in the wholesale markets across the state. Now, the scenario has changed owing to fresh arrival of tomatoes in the market from various districts, said an official from the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC). Sharad Gongarde, secretary, Narayangaon tomato market, which is one of the largest tomato wholesale markets in the state, told TOI, “For the last two days, we have been getting over 30,000 crates of tomatoes against 10,000 crates three weeks ago.

” “There is a high chance that the price will come down further in the coming weeks following harvest from August-end, said an APMC official. Balasaheb Konde, the head of Pune’s Gultekadi marketyard, told TOI, “The price has reduced to Rs 10 to Rs 25 per kg in the market. We received arrival of 1,588 quintals o.
