A back-to-school event was held at a local barber and beauty salon on Saturday in Killeen. Headquarters Upscale Barber and Beauty, 506 W. Jasper Drive, was giving out free haircuts and backpacks to students in the area.

Christine Toodle, owner of Headquarters, said, “We’re doing back-to-school haircuts and braiding styles.” This marked the second consecutive year the company has hosted a back-to-school event and the first time doing it at their place of business. Toodle, whose shop was able to open in part thanks to an American Rescue Plan Act grant, indicated that this was her way of showing her appreciation for that.

She said, “It’s just my way of giving back to the city.” Last year, the event has hosted at a club. This time, it was done outside of the barber and beauty shop.

There were multiple vendors, sponsors and a food truck present outside. As of noon Saturday, the parking lot was completely packed with vehicles. Some people had even parked over areas marked with striped yellow lines due to no typical spots remaining.

Those outside included sponsors such as the Unleashed Beasts Motorcycle Club and the Cycle Knights Motorcycle Club. The Unleashed Beasts had a tent set up just next to the door of the barber and beauty shop and had a multitude of backpacks they were giving away. “We got donations for over 600 backpacks,” said Toodle, adding that the total was at least 200 more than what they had been able to giveaway last year.
