A number of car models will be subject to huge road tax hikes from April, drivers have been warned. Motorists considering buying one of these motors may want to think twice when they learn about eye-watering tax costs. Changes to tax rules have been announced by the Government and owners of some of the biggest and most polluting vehicles will face substantial rises.
The biggest increase will be for some of the newest luxury and high-end models which produce more than 255g/km of CO2 - doubling from £2,745 to a whopping £5,490 a year. This is the first year taxation cost for new buyers the first time a car is registered. It then drops to a standard flat rate, currently £190 a year.
It comes ahead of big changes to road taxation in 2025 which will see owners of electric cars charged for the first time. Small hatchbacks that emit between 76 to 90/km of CO2 will be subject to a £270 charge, up from £135, the Express reports .
