The idea flips the traditional Advent calendar concept, with gifts being given instead of received, and is taking place throughout this month. Behind each door is a suggestion of items to donate or other things to do to help support the winter appeal, as well as ideas to “spread some festive love and joy” in the local community. Some doors include suggestions of food items to donate, such as tinned goods, pasta, rice and biscuits.

On day seven, the calendar recommended donating peanut butter or chocolate spread, which can be a luxury for some, to make toast more exciting. The goal of the calendar is also to encourage kindness in the community. Door three reads: “Chat to your neighbour! You never know what a friendly conversation could do for someone.

” The November calendar is leading up to the foodbank’s full Christmas campaign, which is set to be launched on December 1. The advent calendar can be viewed at Donations of food and toiletries can be made directly to the foodbank at 3 Civic Square, Tranent, every week day from 10am to 2pm. Items can also be dropped off at several shops and libraries throughout East Lothian.
