On March 14, the Capitola Historical Museum will reopen for the season and premiere the 2025 exhibition titled “The Naughty Surf, Fashion Turning Points in Capitola 1860s-1960s.” Dramatic turning points in women’s fashion have initially been seen by many as disruptive, even scandalous. Nowhere has this been truer than at the seaside.

The exhibition derives its title from a quote by a Stockton minister complaining of the “naughty abbreviated bathing suits” of the 1880s, which he believed to be “an abomination to decency and to modesty.” The admission free Capitola Historical Museum, located at 410 Capitola Ave., will be open every Friday through Sunday from noon until 4 p.

m. through the end of the year..
