Closing one of Surrey's tips would be a “bitter blow” that would increase fly-tipping and traffic as thousands of people are forced to drive longer distances to dispose of their waste, opponents have said. Surrey County Council is recommending the closure of the Bagshot Community Recycling Centre claiming it is difficult to access, unmodernised and too small to be upgraded - so it cannot be made fit for the future. The site accounts for about 2 per cent of the county’s recycling centre production and has suffered from repeated incidences of antisocial behaviour.

The closure has not yet been formally confirmed by Surrey County Council’s Cabinet and a four-week consultation has been launched. People are being asked about the impact of the closure and what alternative arrangements they would like to see - such as longer opening hours at the four nearest recycling centres. Opponents, including ward councillor Richard Wilson and the leader of Surrey Heath Borough Council, have called on Surrey to reverse its recommendation, saying it would be catastrophic for the area.
