Pune: Streetlights and high-mast poles along the riverside road as well as in different parts of the city have been damaged in the recent floods and increased water levels of Mutha. The civic body has assured repairs would be done soon. Commuters complained of long and dark stretches with non-functioning streetlights, forcing the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to undertake urgent repairs.
The riverside road, which was submerged in water for almost a week, was worst affected. Civic officials said high-mast poles were also damaged due to excessive flow of water. The water receded and the road was opened, but citizens said the authorities should repair the lights at the earliest.
They said it was causing inconvenience after dark. A senior PMC official from the electrical department said, “We have directed local team to begin repairs and restart the connection.” Nisha Raut, who was in the Shivajinagar area recently, said, “Streetlights are either fluctuating or not working since the last month.
” Baner and Balewadi residents have also been complaining about non-functioning streetlights. They said that despite raising the issue on various platforms, nothing had been done. Officials said preliminary findings suggest most damages were because of waterlogging, moisture and spoilt cables.
