Vadodara: Heavy flooding in Kamatibaug Zoo led to the deaths of eight animals and several birds. The bodies were discovered after water in the zoo receded on Thursday morning. The animals found dead were five nilgai , one Manipuri deer, one tortoise and a crocodile.

Several birds were also found dead in their cages. A zoo official said the enclosures for the nilgai and deer have a mound in the centre to keep them safe in a flood . The animals climb these mounds and survive till the water recedes.

However, the recent flooding was the worst the zoo has witnessed in its history and the water level was much higher than the mounds. Due to the heavy flooding and the current in the zoo, officials and workers were unable to get inside till Thursday morning. When officials reached there and took stock, they found the dead animals.

Sources said a drive to clean the zoo had been started by workers there. The health of the animals is being monitored to ensure that they can be treated if they have any ailments. The deaths that came to light have been reported to the top brass of the civic body and other authorities.

The carcasses were disposed of according to protocol.
