Kendrapada : Five new lighthouses in the state are among 75 in the country that have been developed for tourism, Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal informed the Lok Sabha on Aug 9. “Union govt has already developed the necessary infrastructure and facilities at lighthouses at Gopalpur in Ganjam district, Puri and Chandrabhaga in Puri district, Paradip in Jagatsinghpur and False Point lighthouse in Kendrapada district,” said Jayant Chatterjee, navigation assistant-cum-headlight keeper of False Point lighthouse. The lighthouse at Chandrabhaga is located near Konark Sun Temple, a Unesco world heritage site.
In 2020, authorities installed a lift at the lighthouse for tourists . “Other lighthouses will soon receive lifts,” added Chatterjee. The 186-year-old lighthouse in Kendrapada is a heritage building and is situated on an island.
“The combination of its scenic location and beautiful design has made it one of the most sought after lighthouses to visit,” said Chatterjee. “The mangrove forest and creeks near the lighthouse are now attracting many visitors. Tourists rely on country boats to reach the lighthouse.
The authorities should build a bridge over the Nasi river at Kharinashi to connect the lighthouse to the mainland,” said Ajaya Samal, a retired professor.
