Pune: PMC has invited suggestions from citizens till the end of August on public works that can be carried out in their areas under the participatory budget 2025-26. Citizens can suggest any public work, such as road construction or provision of streetlight poles, within their areas. An option for online submission of applications has been provided, in addition to the physical submission of forms.

Citizens can suggest any type of work up to Rs 5 lakh. A maximum of works amounting to Rs 75 lakh can be suggested in a single ward. The administration has asked the ward offices to display the details of works suggested by citizens under the participatory budget initiative in previous budgets.

Activist Vikram Gaikwad said that citizens are not aware of the participatory budget initiative because of lack of proper publicity. “The administration can reach out to people through social media platforms and also through various campaigns,” he said. Activist Vivek Velankar, said, “The intention behind the initiative looks good, but it will be successful only if it is implemented well,” he added.

Ex-corporators from the city have said the participatory budget can play a crucial role in the absence of a general body. PMC can prepare an effective budget if more people participate,” a corporator said.
