An iconic beach in North Wales has been closed to vehicles as Storm Lilian sweeps across the region . The decision by Cyngor Gwynedd fuelled an online debate about whether it should stay that way. Cars, vans and motorhomes have been barred from Morfa Bychan beach (Black Rock Sands), near Porthmadog , amid concerns over strong winds.

The beach was closed following yesterday’s high tide. With rough seas and another high tide at 11.15am today, it’s likely to stay shut until this afternoon (Friday, August 23).

Contractors and members of the council’s maritime service are using the opportunity to carry out “essential work”. This is to “ensure the beach is safe to be driven on”, said the local authority, adding that the beach was still open to walkers. A regular visitor said online: “Went on Sunday on our way back through and it was so busy. Literally no space.
