A beloved mural in the Gay Village has been repaired after 'some little toe rag’ defaced the artwork last month with a string of homophobic slurs. The street art of drag performer Divina de Campo, who regularly performs at bars and venues across Canal Street, was created by local artist Akse P19 in 2019 to coincide with her appearance on the first series of BBC Three’s hit show RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. In 2021, the artwork on Richmond Street was one of two pieces that were daubed with homophobic graffiti and was quickly repaired.

Divina, who has also appeared on The Voice UK and toured the UK in theatrical runs of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and the Spongebob Squarepants musical, shared last month that the artwork had once again been targeted by vandals. At the time, the artist said she was ‘so disappointed’ and said the Government had ‘given credence’ to ‘those who do this’.

Divina, who is set to host a special 30th anniversary screening of Priscilla as part of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ film and television festival SCENE on Thursday night, has now shared an update on the mural - which has been lovingly restored by original artist Akse.
