FARGO — As part of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Awareness Month, child safety experts are sharing how you can create a safe sleep environment for infants. In 2022, the CDC reported about 3,700 cases of SUID, which is the sudden and unexpected death of any child younger than age 1. The three types of SUID are sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS, suffocation or strangulation in bed and unknown deaths.

To reduce these risks, specialists say follow the ABC's of safe sleep: alone, on their back and in their crib. "It's a complex issue, but by practicing those safe sleep practices, we can definitely lower the amount of babies who are lost to SUID," Sanford Health's Community Life Educator Kailyn Allen said. Health experts started promoting the Safe to Sleep campaign in 1994 and since, the National Institute of Health says SIDS cases have been cut in half.
