Thursday, August 22, 2024 Labour expert-led review unveils a transformative plan to revolutionize the UK’s rail and urban transport, driving efficiency, sustainability, and growth. The Labour Party’s Rail and Urban Transport Review, initiated in December 2023 while in opposition, has released its recommendations aimed at maximizing the vast benefits of rail and urban transport infrastructure. Led by Juergen Maier CBE, former Siemens CEO, and supported by an Expert Panel from across the industry, this independent review received secretariat assistance from the Urban Transport Group, with additional expertise and thought leadership provided by Arup.

The review distilled evidence from across the transport sector into five key themes, each accompanied by policy recommendations designed to rejuvenate the public-private partnership and significantly shorten project delivery times and costs. The recommendations emphasize the need for an ambitious transport infrastructure plan that not only addresses the UK’s needs for the next five years but also lays a foundation for the next 50 years. This starts with the creation of a Transport Strategy for England (TSE), which should integrate skills development, land use, and housing objectives in alignment with regional and local strategies.
