Bethan's grief-stricken father, former England cricketer and respected sports journalist Steve James, was heartbreakingly unable to return home in time to see his daughter due to travel delays caused by bad weather conditions while he was away covering a Six Nations' match in Ireland. At the pre-inquest review hearing held in Pontypridd, South Wales on Wednesday, 18 September it was revealed that the expected medical cause of death for Bethan was likely sepsis.

The upcoming inquest, led by area coroner Patricia Morgan, aims to meticulously examine the chain of events leading up to Bethan's death. It will scrutinise her medical history, the level of care she received from the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, as well as the details surrounding her transfer from her home to the hospital on February 8, 2020. Following the heartbreaking loss on 9 February, Steve James paid a poignant tribute to his beloved Bethan on Facebook.

He wrote in sorrow: "We have the most indescribably devastating news that our beautiful daughter Bethan suddenly passed away on Saturday evening. Our hearts ar.
