Elizabeth Olsen Says Marvel Has Created a ‘Feeling of Insurance’ So She Can Star in Indie Films Too, but Returning Has ‘Always Felt Like a Choice’

Elizabeth Olsen has the best of both worlds as the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and an indie film darling. At Vulture Festival over the weekend, the “WandaVision” and “His Three Daughters” star clarified that though she doesn’t feel forced to make Marvel series and movies in order to pursue indie projects, it’s created a “feeling of insurance.” “I’d never really had the mentality of ‘one for them, one for me,’” Olsen said ( via Vulture ).

“Marvel has been such a consistent thing I’ve been able to return to and has created — what’s the word? — some feeling of insurance in my life that has given me freedom to choose other jobs. So I haven’t felt like, ‘And then I’ll do this to do this.’” Olsen added that she’s always returned to Marvel because she’s truly wanted to.

It “has always felt like a choice,” she said. “Every time, it’s character-driven. It’s always like, ‘We have this idea, and that’s why we want you to come back.

’ It’s not like, ‘Just throw her in something.’” She went on to say that superhero films can, in some ways, be necessary to the survival of independent cinema, acknowledging that they help “pay the rent” for theaters to show smaller-budget movies. Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will return to the MCU in the animated miniseries “Marvel Zombies,” which will release in October 2025.

But until then, Olsen is trying to help director Todd Solondz fund his new film “Love C.
